Operational overview and field deployment
Instrument role in underwater acoustic localization systems
Sonotronics Underwater Diver Kit UDR-08 is designed to enable human divers to locate and approach submerged acoustic beacons in low-visibility environments. It functions as a portable hydrophone-based detection and tracking system.
Functional usage context
This system is used to detect acoustic signals emitted by underwater pingers and transmitters. It provides directional and omnidirectional hydrophone inputs, allowing divers to determine the bearing and proximity of tagged underwater objects or organisms. It also supports telemetry reception from compatible acoustic devices.
Operational environment
The system is designed for shallow to moderate-depth underwater operations in coastal, harbor, and research environments. It is particularly effective in conditions with limited visibility where visual navigation is not possible.
System integration role
Within an underwater tracking workflow, it functions as a handheld acoustic receiver. It complements fixed hydrophone arrays, USBL systems, and acoustic pingers by providing real-time local directional tracking capability for divers.
Deployment usage
Deployment involves a diver carrying the receiver unit during an underwater mission. The system is configured for a specific frequency range before the dive and then used to detect and home in on acoustic signals emitted by target beacons.
Typical users
It is commonly used by marine researchers, scientific diving teams, and underwater survey operators conducting biological tagging, equipment recovery, and submerged asset localization in low-visibility conditions.
This robust unit is used for locating Sonotronics pingers, even in low visibility environments. The UDR now has a visual signal strength indicator on the display. The UDR is also capable of receiving telemetry from Sonotronics transmitters.
Sonotronics, Inc. offers an Under Water Diver Receiver that allows a diver to approach an object or animal marked with an ultrasonic pinger*. The UDR can achieve ranges exceeding 1km, while still allowing relocation in zero visibility. The UDR comes with waterproof headphones and has variable gain control to maintain good signal strength and directionality during approach of the target, as well as volume control and a backlit display. The UDR is user programmable for frequency and gain ranges.
*The UDR has been used in field research for locating pingers manufactured by SONOTRONICS as well as others.
